This small handled cup has a compact, low form intended for coffee and other short servings. The curved handle extends from the side without interrupting the visibility of the clay pattern across the body.
Red and white clay were combined before forming, allowing the two colors to stretch, fold, and merge within the structure of the cup. Areas of clearer separation remain visible beside softer pink transitions, recording how the layered clay moved during the throwing process.
The pattern was not applied to the finished surface. It exists throughout the clay body, changing continuously around the cup without establishing a fixed front or repeating composition.
Studio Note
This cup was made as an early experiment in combining red and white clay. The balance between distinct lines and blended areas developed successfully enough to become the starting point for a future nerikomi series.
Later works will continue the material study through changes in color ratio, layering, compression, and form rather than attempting to reproduce this pattern exactly.
Ceramic Characteristics
This work was individually formed and fired. Variations in contour, wall thickness, handle shape, color distribution, marbled transitions, and pattern density are natural characteristics of the colored-clay process.
Measurements are approximate. The irregular movement, blending, and separation of the red and white clay are integral to the work and are not considered manufacturing defects. Future works from the same study will develop different patterns rather than reproduce this surface exactly.
Care Information
Hand washing is recommended. Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners, direct flame, impact around the handle and rim, and sudden temperature changes.
