Purple-Grey Marbled Stoneware Bowl

This small handbuilt bowl has an intentionally irregular circular form. Its walls turn slightly inward at the rim, creating a contained profile rather than an open, symmetrical silhouette.

Purple-grey marbled clay forms the main body, interrupted by small traces of red, black, and white. The colored clay was combined within the material itself, allowing the pattern to pass through the body rather than sit on top as surface decoration. A white base creates a visual break beneath the darker marbled form.

The bowl was shaped by pinching rather than refined into mechanical symmetry. Uneven transitions, changing wall contours, and unpolished forming marks remain visible beneath the transparent glaze, preserving the direct physical record of the handbuilding process.

Studio Note

The irregularity was not treated as something to correct after forming. Leaving the contour unrefined allows the marbled pattern and the pressure of the hands to remain equally present: one records the movement within the clay, while the other records the movement used to shape it.

Ceramic Characteristics

This work was individually formed, glazed, and fired. Variations in contour, wall thickness, rim height, marbled pattern, color distribution, and surface texture are inherent to its handbuilt construction.

Measurements are approximate. The uneven outline, visible forming marks, and unpolished irregularities were intentionally retained and form part of the finished work rather than manufacturing defects.

Care Information

Hand washing is recommended. Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners, sudden temperature changes, direct flame, and impact around the irregular rim.
