Eleven Ants Small Vase

This small porcelain vase has a narrow, rounded form that allows the painted surface to be viewed continuously from different angles. Eleven blue ants move around the exterior, each drawn in a different posture rather than repeated from a single illustration.

The fine underglaze lines follow the changing contour of the vase without establishing a fixed front or back. Individual ants appear, disappear, and enter new relationships as the form is rotated.

The piece was developed to test how much detail could be retained through underglaze painting and firing. The finest lines required at least two applications of color to maintain sufficient depth and definition beneath the transparent glazed surface.

Studio Note

This study established a clearer relationship between line width and color density. Fine underglaze drawing can retain considerable detail, but the number of applications becomes part of the surface decision rather than a separate technical step.

Ceramic Characteristics

Each work is individually formed, painted, glazed, and fired. Variations in dimensions, contour, line weight, color density, illustration placement, and glaze coverage are natural characteristics of studio ceramics.

Measurements are approximate. Minor irregularities and visible traces of the forming, painting, glazing, and firing processes form part of the finished work and are not considered manufacturing defects.

Care Information

Hand washing is recommended. Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners, impact, and sudden temperature changes.
