Vintage Floral Lidded Stoneware Jar

This low stoneware jar has a broad, compact form with a fitted lid. Its shallow proportions keep the interior fully visible when opened while allowing the closed jar to read as a single contained volume.

Different floral motifs occupy each part of the piece. A large red flower fills the interior base, while smaller circular flowers repeat around the outer wall. The underside of the lid carries a ring of related motifs, and a separate symmetrical flower extends across its upper surface. Although the drawings belong to the same visual family, no single pattern is repeated across every section.

Dark red, blue-grey, brown, and black underglaze sit against the naturally warm, slightly yellow tone of the coarse stoneware. The muted palette and irregular brushwork give the jar the character of an old household container—something resembling a small spice jar that has remained in use for years.

The high-fired glazed interior allows the piece to hold condiments, spices, sauces, or oil once cooled slightly from direct cooking temperature. It can also function as a small storage jar for jewelry or other personal objects.

Studio Note

The surface was developed through several related but separate compositions rather than one continuous pattern. Opening, closing, and turning the jar reveals a different floral arrangement each time, allowing the decoration to extend beyond the most immediately visible exterior.

Ceramic Characteristics

This work was individually formed, painted, glazed, and fired. Variations in contour, lid alignment, clay texture, brush direction, line width, color density, motif placement, and glaze coverage are natural characteristics of studio ceramics.

Measurements are approximate. Minor irregularities and visible traces of forming, painting, glazing, and firing form part of the finished work and are not considered manufacturing defects.

Care Information

Hand washing is recommended. Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners, direct flame, impact around the lid and rim, and sudden temperature changes.

When using the jar for oil or other hot food, do not transfer it directly from a cold environment or pour in oil immediately from a very hot pan. Allow extreme temperatures to moderate first to reduce the risk of thermal shock.
