This low stoneware jar has a broad diameter and shallow profile. It is currently open at the top, with a separate lid planned as a later addition.

Small birds and winding vines continue around the exterior without establishing a fixed front. The painted elements follow the circumference of the jar, gradually appearing and disappearing as the form is turned.

A flower is painted at the center of the interior base. Unlike the exterior decoration, which unfolds through rotation, the interior image is revealed immediately when the vessel is viewed from above—or later, when the completed lid is removed.

The natural tone and visible texture of the coarse stoneware remain part of the finished surface, placing the painted imagery against the clay body rather than concealing it beneath an opaque ground.

Studio Note

The planned lid will change how the interior flower is encountered. Once the jar is completed, the exterior birds and vines will remain continuously visible, while the flower at the bottom will become a concealed image revealed only when the vessel is opened.

Ceramic Characteristics

Each work is individually formed, painted, glazed, and fired. Variations in dimensions, contour, clay texture, painted line, color density, motif placement, and glaze coverage are natural characteristics of studio ceramics.

Measurements are approximate. Minor irregularities and visible traces of the forming, painting, glazing, and firing processes form part of the finished work and are not considered manufacturing defects.

Care Information

Hand washing is recommended. Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners, sudden temperature changes, direct flame, and impact. Once the lid is added, handle the lid and rim separately and with care.
