This small sheep figure is shaped by hand, giving the body a compact form with slight variations across its contour. Underglaze-painted markings continue around the rounded volume, gradually revealing different relationships between line and form as the viewing angle changes.
Small holes were made in the ears for suspended bells. The original plan was to use copper bells, but none had the right scale or visual relationship with the ceramic figure. Small handbuilt ceramic bells will be made and added later, allowing the suspended elements to continue the material language of the main form.
Studio Note
Small sculptural forms provide a different surface for observing painted line. Unlike a vessel, the changing outline of the figure interrupts and redirects the markings, preventing the complete surface from being visible from a single viewpoint.
